I had the chance to spent a few days in Lisbon with my now wife. We had a wonderful time and where surprised by the low prices of food in the restaurants, in porto later on we took a tour with a local and he told us how less money people from portugal earn on average and how that doesnt fit with the rent. We were sad and also sure that we are (even if we dont want to) part of the problem.

Sad reality experienced by many residents of major cities around the world. Funny how she said she believes she has a right to return to her home city as a native resident since it’s where her family and traditions are lived. Europeans feel privileged enough to say this while they displaced so many in their worldly triumphs 😭

Coming from Hawaii, I can relate to the impact of tourism on the local culture. It is sometimes difficult to recognize Oahu today when once there were pineapple and sugar cane fields. We also have many foreign investors and also out of state wealthy mainlanders that have moved into small local communities. On my father’s side street 12 of 14 homes were bought by non locals,. Many born and raised in Hawaii often move to and remain on the mainland U.S. for education and jobs. It’s so unfortunate that locals don’t have a living wage for where they are from. I think many in Hawaii would have stayed or returned if that was possible…
As an aside Hawaii has ties to Portuguese culture as we had many immigrants from Madeira and the Azores in the late 1800s. We have a melting pot of cultures and been very much influenced by the braguinha (=‘ukulele), linguiça from Madeira (=Portuguese sausage), malassadas (=malasada), pão doce (=Portuguese sweet bread and inspiration for King’s Hawaiian bread)…

She's absolutely right! She has the right to live in the place where she was born without it being made unaffordable for her to do so. The same thing has happened in many neighborhoods here in New York. The people who formerly resided in many of them can no longer afford to and that is unfair. As for globalization, I think it's up to governments to safeguard their country against losing what makes it what it is. I just returned from Lisbon and it's a beautiful city. I couldn't imagine it losing its Lisbon flair. It's a place that I said I could definitely live in IF I committed myself to learning the language and also to make sure that I try become part of the community as opposed to living outside of it as simply and expat.

@ashlee2142Public transport in Lisbon is genuinely good if you live near a metro line. The Viva Viagem card covers metro, bus, tram, and ferries. Worth getting on day one.

@zack900-q8tA few years ago, I worked for several months in Portugal as a German civil engineer on the Porto-Lisbon high-speed rail project. I spoke with many Portuguese people who often told me that they could barely afford their rent because so much housing is simply being snapped up by the tourism sector. I was also really shocked that some products in the markets are twice as expensive as in Germany. That’s a huge difference when you consider that the minimum wage there is significantly lower than in Germany. But I was still very impressed by the country and its people! I wish the country and its people all the best! I’d love to come back one day.
@kettkett-oz9eiI loved Lisbon, when I visited there in 2021. The food and drinks at the sidewalk cafes and restaurants was excellent. And the service was outstanding. Then, you can just stroll down the street, and you're at the seaside. Magnificent!

I ❤ Portugal! I've been to Lisbon twice. The first time I visited Portugal I went to Porto, then Lisbon. I was surprised that I could read and understand the signs in Portugal, because when I had gone to Barcelona I was not able to understand the signs there. I also noticed men that looked similar to my dad. 😂 I eventually took an Ancestry test to see my family origin, and it came back to 15% Portuguese! It makes sense why I felt that Portugal spoke to me, and why I felt a deep connection to that country. Saudade Portugal! 🇵🇹 🥹

@pam3320I spent a few weeks in Portugal for vacation. What I noticed is that all the young people are preparing themselves to live abroad for better opportunities. It's clearly now considered a rite of passage into adulthood. This means that they ALL speak way better English than, say, people from Spain or Italy or France. And the intelligent kids are learning practical skills to make themselves marketable abroad, not for instance focusing as much on the arts that would keep them contained within their borders. The brain drain problem is quite real.

@edudasoaresWhen in Lisbon the amount of tourists suffocate you. The locals are kicked out of the beautiful parts of the city and neighbourhoods . For years so.many places got turned into Airbnb apartments or sold to rich foreigners. Especially US Americans. Unfortunately it tells you a lot about the government.
@joselin2466A few months ago, I spent more than a week in Portugal, and it was easily one of the best places I've ever visited. The country is so beautiful, and the people are so welcoming! Lisbon is an absolutely gorgeous city! Though I preferred the vibe in Porto a little better, I would happily return to Lisbon for another visit.

@luanrgGentrification is a huge problem in many European countries like Portugal, Spain and Greece and it displaces long-standing communities while eroding cultural identity and access to affordable living. I simply dont understand why governments fail to take action. It is mind boggling. How can you let your own country sink into that situation? So sadddd

@RomanTokarenkoI spent 2 gorgeous August days docked next to Lisbon on a cruise ship. Having supper on the ship over looking the Tagus river watching the sail boats and enjoying the sun setting behind the beautiful bridge. Dreamy and of course pastei de nata were so delicious
