What Was Life Like In A Medieval Castle?

Video Overview & Insights

Jason Kingsley, the modern knight, discusses what a single day might have been like in a remote border castle on the marches of a medieval kingdom. Who did what and why? #dnd #medieval #castle

It would be so awesome to just watch some series about civilian, peaceful life in a castle, with mundane problems and so on

— @mmiraall

Ever wondered what daily life was really like inside a medieval castle? Step back in time and discover the truth beyond the myths! No AI, AI free, human made, no gen AI.

Everything in this video is filmed, tested, and experienced in real conditions. No AI-generated content.

You are definitely a good narrator! I could picture many of the details you described.

— @bonniebrush94

In this video, we explore a full day in the life of a small medieval castle, from the moment the sun rises over the battlements to the final watch of the night. Based entirely on real historical records, we follow the routines of the castle’s inhabitants—the lord, lady, guards, servants, and even the children.

You’ll learn about: Morning routines in the great hall,

00:19 You can call them Scots, Jason..

What people actually ate in a castle (not just feasts!)

Daily duties of knights, cooks, and maids

This needs a sequel video!

Castle defense, hygiene, and security

The surprising role of children and animals

Good sir, I mean you no harm, but all I can think about, while watching this video, is: wouldn't that poleaxe just go right through that chainmail if I hit hard enough?

— @DiverDrive428

Whether you're a fan of medieval history, a game master looking to bring your world to life, or just curious about how people truly lived in the Middle Ages, this video offers accurate, engaging, and often surprising insights into medieval castle life.

Based on genuine historical documents and archaeological evidence.

24:16 The enjoyment I get from gestures that go with the little gates inside the great gates boost this from a wonderful lecture to my very favorite lecture.

Thank you for a wonderful series and a truly entertaining channel.

I have experimented with a drop spindle.....it's not as easy as it may sound.....I also own a cardigan made of very fine alpaca wool....it is a fantastic garment. I believe it is handmade.....soft warm comfortable ...aesthetically good looking..a lot of skill knowhow and effort has gone into its manufacture..

Someone may have asked this before, sorry if so, how do you do such steady filming while riding? Does someone ride next to you? Selfie stick sometimes? (But can see both your hands in some videos) Do you have a trained hawk with a steady cam? I love your videos, honest question

Fantastic video! One question: where does burglary fall on the list of potential threats? I imagine more than one poor peasant during a year of bad harvest would start eyeing all the valuables being brought into the castle.

The balance of humor, documentary, and living history is charming, really drawing one in.
A Cadfael book featured a conflict about which woman controlled the keys to the stores of the castle. Would the lady of the castle have had this duty?

This video creates such a believable story, excellent facts and suspenseful atmosphere. Then it pairs so well with the Goodrich Castle video. Maybe we'll have a castle compilation video.

I don't believe you have ever claimed to be a knight because you're a farmer but I think you believe you were a knight back in the day. A farmer would not be so comfy yarning away in chain mail surrounded by broad swords, halyards et al.
