when a director knows how to start a movie

Video Overview & Insights

David Fincher is a master of storytelling, and Fight Club might be his most immersive film. Even among classics like Se7en, Zodiac, and The Social Network, its opening sequence stands out. A fast-paced montage that pulls you into the Narrator’s world while seamlessly delivering exposition. In this video essay, I break down how Fincher uses editing, visuals, and pacing to hook the audience from the very first frame. With unforgettable performances by Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter, Fight Club remains one of the most influential films in modern cinema.

If you could only pick one Fincher film to rewatch forever, which would it be?

Sorry, porkchop.
I dig Fincher. Buuuuuuttt..
Chuck Palhanuik deserves wayyyyyy more credit.
Not Jim Uhls. Any decent "screenwriter" (as if there's any actual difference) can take any of Chuck's books and "adapt" them. Fincher was smart enough to know the book is already finished. Some little tweeks and stage craft needed but its done. Just story board, get the right location and shoot it. He got Pitt who was huge at the time and the bank was done.
If Jim Uhls did anything it was satisfying the Writer's Guild demand of having a union guy get credit.

My favourite detail of the opening of this film is the perfection of its first joke. "This is Bob. Bob has bitch tits". It gets a little chuckle and feels safe enough. But then he gives the context that runs it into dark comedy. "This is a support group for men with testicular cancer". He invites even the more prudish to have a little chuckle at Bob's tits. He makes you complicit. He puts your prints on the smoking gun. Then he tells you. It sets the tone for the type of humour in the rest of the film and gives you a pass at laughing at the morbid. It is also a very Tyler way to handle the situation

A brilliantly constructed video, my friend. Even with the script writer's Acts broken down. i really appreciated it, thank you. I will now go buy the book because of this video. Subbed.

My wife and I have come to agree that any movie that has a sex scene within the first 3 minutes is unwatchable.

"Infamous" means famous for being BAD.

Due to the YouTube Feedback Loop, wherein video-makers parrot and propagate each other's speech errors, misuse of Infamous has become rampant - misuers seeming to believe it is simply an intensfied form of "famous" (perhaps in the manner of "invaluable," which essentially intensifies "valuable").

I'd hope that all directors know how they want to start their movies. Have they just been winging it all this time?

This movie is way more meta than you guys realize it isn't Tyler selling you his ideas it's Tyler in the movie theater running the projector booth that's why you can see the edge of the film he's supposed to be shaking the projector that's why there's a dick in the very last frame of the movie Tyler edited that into it

I think the best opening to a movie I’ve ever seen is Baby Driver. It honestly shows each main character as they are and how they’re presented within 5 minutes without saying anything, no dialogue other than gasps and shouts. The VERY first 2 shots are the most important of the movie: cars and music. You can tell immediately that we are seeing the movie from Baby’s perspective, as the actual action happens off screen in the bank. It’s such a good 6 minutes.
