Different to the Deptford i know - the traffic-clogged one in South London.
I like the US version better - lots of trees. Though its true , people can walk all around the UK Deptford and even down to the river itself...

This reminded of walking to middle school as a kid in the 70s. It was approximately 3 miles. There were very few sidewalks along the way. My walk consisted of cutting through several neighbors yards then crossing a state highway then following train tracks (not abandoned so you had to get out of the way if you heard a train) until I got to actual sidewalks for about the last 3 blocks. Scary to think about today.

I recently drove in the US and seems everyone speeds everywhere. I drove the speed limits and felt like an old person compared to all the other drivers.
I also walked a little from my hotel to a store and it took me 5 minuets to cross the road… at a crosswalk 😅

This seemed to take off in the 90s somewhere...more sprawled suburbs, built for autos is one reason....but also, the advent of Safetyism. Zero risk play, zero risk anything...walking even a quarter mile to school, sidewalks or not, became seen as a dangerous proposition. A lot more younger parents started to drive kids to, from school, began to micromanage their lives with scheduling everything around them. I saw the phenomenon take off around 1995/2000.

i mean in my home town i dont have sidewalks but in poland we have a rule that if ther is no sidewalk the left part of the road from the pedestrian perspective is for walking and the right is for bicicels, but still in poland cars know that the peple that are walking are more inportant. but still after watching the whole video im starting to fill bad for USA kids

I am from Germany, and I visited the E3 trade show in Los Angeles for work. On the second day, I did something that is perfectly normal in Europe: I walked through the city to explore it. In some places in LA, sidewalks were completely missing, and at times there was nothing more than an emergency strip just a foot wide. Drivers looked at me as if I were a lunatic. Because of this, you in America have lost something of enormous value—and most US citizens aren't even aware of it.

I was using a pedestrian crossing in a small Long Island town and was amazed that its perfectly fine for cars to conitinue driving through even when it was a green light and supposedly safe for us to cross. The drivers seemed annoyed that we had the audacity to try crossing a busy crossroad with our kids.

In my area if you lived within 2 miles of the school building you could walk. Its still the policy for most places in my state.

I walked too school. I did it because i got bullied on the bus. It was about a mile long walk. Everyone was shocked that I walked.
Though I must say looking back I'm glad I did walk, not only am I good shape now, but I also don't need a car for most stuff which saves on gas since I can just walk most places in town
those patchy bits of sidewalk likely have the sidewalk underneath the overgrown grass. Watching a landscaping channel sometime, they uncover hidden sidewalks from overgrowth all the time
@YouLoseSirI grew up in a small village, literally 1 mile × 1 ½ miles, in Southern Ohio, USA. I walked to school every day until I got a car, and then I drove. My high school (7th through 12th grades) didn't even have bussing. Either you walked there, or you/parents drove you. You could try to catch a middle school bus to get to a friend's house across town, but mostly, we walked. We had 3 busses for the entire school district (elementary, middle, and high school) to use for pick-ups/drop-offs or field trips.
@moon_goddess_diannaYeah, this is all normal stuff here, and many of the issues lie between differing governing bodies being responsible for the land. You literally cannot mow the weedy patch next door if it is not in your jurisdiction. Fences cannot exceed a recommended height if they lie next to a different zoning sector. Dont even get me started on snow plowing of roads. And frankly, kids arent safe on the side of roads here. Working parents have nobody to walk little ones to school and back.

Rise of conservative nationalism, having toxic patriotism, corny capitalist licking the booths of stupid politicians, the main left wing party is just right wing party only few step towards left than main right wing party. @NastyNateDawgThis is the United States of America, the greatest and most powerful country in history. Our kids don't need to walk to school we can give them a ride. There's plenty of other opportunities for kids to learn what they would from walking to school. Like getting them in clubs or a job.

@michaelhicks2665To be fair, I also wouldn't want my children walking anywhere, regardless of the infrastructure because of how bad child trafficking has gotten. Especially just going to school, predictable routes make it all the easier.

@AkireraStraberri3This is actually was better than the pedestrian infrastructure in my area. For the most part there is no sidewalk or emergency lanes. If you walk you're just walking on the straight up shoulder. The really crazy part os there are BUS STOPS right on the shoulder. So, you are required to walk on the shoulder if you want to take the bus.
@mp3junk3yI'm a rural town offical. You want sidewalks. I need money to pay for them. $1,000 per square foot. 50 percent increase in property tax. Residents say no.

@iassumeitsisaGermany, the sidewalks mostly owned by the city. I know my sidewalk at my house is owned by the city. But it's weird that I have to clean it or have to pay when the city makes it.
@BekiNakashiimaif you can't trust your upper gov to not steal and embezzle, how can you trust it with higher taxes - and how do you convince a people that's been vetted to believe that higher taxes is a bad thing for your community, to believe otherwise?
i'm just glad i don't live in a third world country with these issues - but you should probably get these uppermentioned issues fixed soon; speaking to you, america.

@einat1622Sidewalks are shit where I live in Tennessee... they are pretty much non-existent where they should be, but there will be random sections in the middle of nowhere. From what I can tell it's left up to developers to put them in and not the city/county.

@robin888officialthe thing is, cars are a business that's worth a lot of money, walking or biking is a business that makes almost zero money, there is your reason why these infrastructures aren't invested in.

Barely workers rights.
Low food standards.

A lot of flags, hymns, anthems, pledges.
Proud poor people
everything is designed to make you pump gas.
Riding your bike doesnt make oil companies generate revenue.
Walking doesnt make them generate revenue.
Alternative energy doesnt make them revenue.
People not being able to freely move are the product.
Same with public transportation.
Same with free healthcare vs drugs.
Same with education.
americans are consumers only.
And to be able to, they need to be working as much as possible.
Work life balance is something they dont have.
Social responsibility is something they dont have.
Work to consume, buy for status.
Everything else is ruled out as communism, and that is bad, so they learned.
