Cuprous oxide, the main ingredient in anti-fouling paint, is red, although you can get af paint in many colors now. I have red anti-fouling on my sailboat, and it's been my color of choice for 40 years.

My guess was that they're painted that way to contrast really sharply with the blue (or black at night) of the sea, to increase visibility and help people who have fallen off locate the ship, especially if they are looking at it from beneath the water for any alarming reason.

A boat painted red........." A boat painted red will sail faster than a boat painted blue, or white, as speed impeding barnacles have no love for red, and therefore will not attach themselves to the hull of such vessel. Old sailors proverb I heard as a kid.

Copper Oxide - which one? Copper(I) oxide or Cuprous oxide Cu2O is red while Copper(II) oxide Cupric oxide CuO is black.

Can u not see the measuring tape on the side.. its literally to measure the height of the water.. these are metal ships not wooden.. too much weight on the boat the levels will show it

Every couple of years we had to get our boat hauled out of the water and bottom painted.
Expensive.
This is mainly because of barnacles.

My science teacher looked at me weird when he asked the same question and I said it was so the ships were easier to find when they are upside down. It made perfect sense to me!

My dad had tugboat and barges and other boats. That's called antifouling paint and it keep barnacles from attaching to the hull. Used to have copper and Chromium and other strong chemicals in it. Most are banned now. You only see a lot of red when the vessel is empty hence the term riding high.
