Why Does Australia Have Such a Tiny Population? (Despite Being Absolutely Massive)

Video Overview & Insights

Australia is huge—like, really huge—so why does it have such a small population? From harsh landscapes to historical quirks, we’re breaking down the surprising reasons behind this continental paradox!

Australia's net migration has not been under 200,000 for nearly a decade. Last year alone it was over 400,000, causing a massive rental shortage and congestion the country cannot handle the stain on such a massively fast increase in infrastructure demands. They also force wages down for the rest of us as hospitality wages have barely moved in nearly 20 years, certainly not in line with inflation.

The so called "stolen generations" is a myth pushed by leftist radicals who desire the political environment in Australia to mirror the racial grievance seen in the US. This lie has led to social workers too scared to remove children from abusive families if they claim to be Aboriginal. You can make this claim if you have one great grand parent who may have been aboriginal. This leads to domestic violence and child sexual abuse at levels that are many times above average that are completely ignored because.... culture.
Edit: Never mind, this whole thing was just an excuse to repeat leftists talking points, genocide, racism, global warming etc. etc.

Population started to decline because people started needed two jobs to survive 1 to pay rent and 1 to buy essentials. The cost of the average house is $1,000,000. I house that was $320,000 before covid is now $900,000. There are generations who are now locked out of the property market who will never be able to pay off a house and as a result refuse to have children.

If a child has been removed from their parent post 2008, it’s for good reason. Are you just supposed to let them be abused, due to cultural sensitivities! The facts are, that aboriginals have addiction issues, and are involved in serious criminal activity at a far higher rate. Of you argue it’s due to intergenerational trauma, then that’s no argument for not protecting kids. Australia has become too culturally sensitive in regard to Aboriginals as it is. Alice Springs is essentially a “no go zone”, as no politician wants to be branded racist, by addressing deep problems in aboriginal communities.

The concluding sentence didn't quite make sense. The birth rate may continue to decline. I am not sure that the immigration rate will be affected. I am not sure you are either. Are you implying climate change will bring the immigration rate down? You said it in a round about way but not directly. If so, I have never heard a statement like this before.

Please NEVER EVER! call us First Nations people it’s extremely offensive and factually incorrect. The First Nations people are people indigenous to Canada and we are nothing alike. It completely erases 60,000 years of culture

The biggest reason is we are in the middle of nowhere. Immigrating to Australia was a strange decision compared to immigrating to the Americas in the 1800s. Much further away, worse conditions for agriculture, much more aggressive nature and landscape and much less developed than the Americas at that time

The Europeans treatment of the aboriginals wasn't good but its comparatively exaggerated.

Everybody tries to liken it to Native Americans but it's not even close.

White Australians were often hung for murdering aboriginals, the US was paying people for scalps.

Aboriginals were often ignored and left to do what they want if they left the settlers alone.

The stolen generation was implemented terribly but in aboriginal communities sexual abuse and alcoholism has always been a huge issue.

It is actually so insulting that people look at declining birth rates as a sign of a strong economy.
Young Australians are not having children because we can't afford to buy houses, it's not because we want to be wealthy.

I think even our coastline seems to be massively underutilized, yes even our east coast. One of the major problems of Melbourne and Sydney is that they are Melbourne and Sydney - most large+ sized businesses are based here (especially fintech) and with office attendance requirements it means they are required to stay here. As such everything from housing increases (both rental and buying) goes through the roof
If there were incentives and decoupling from Sydney-Melbourne (and to a lesser extent Brisbane) by operating perhaps business hubs (for example, local offshoots of large+ businesses), limited tax breaks or whatever, you can help re-distribute population mass.
I do think we need more skilled workers; but they can't all be based in the sydney-melbourne-brisbane area, they need to be placed outside it, and placing them outside will simulate local economies and get money moving,, including increasing tax revenue and services - infrastructure projects.

Australia immigration is low class with low skill to fill poor paid jobs with 3rd world imports to max corp profits and mindlessly Pay extortionate rents & utilities… Alongside the extortive “education qualifications”.

Take a Look at the AU educated migration for Real results.

The "rate of children taken has doubled" is framed so stupidly. The rate has increased because child services do their job better and remove children from their 24/7 drunk and drugged parents

Canada's geography, despite being the opposite of Australia's (a bit chilly in some places, with plenty of water (60% of all the world's lakes)) has led to a very similar population pattern. One lonely city in the southwest corner, most of rest of the population concentrated in one area towards the southeast, and one oddball island off the southeast coast.

The Australian flag in the video is missing a star. FFS. The history of europeans meeting the indigenous peoples of Australia has its horrific points; however, Simon is giving the "activist" version, as in, the retelling of history for presentist political purposes.

hahahaaha. Yeah Emu's are brutal, I lived 150km west of Longreach, QLD. in an area called the Cockatoo Mountains, an opal mine area, there we lived in a tin shed surrounded by a family of kangaroos and other assorted wildlife ( also where I learnt how to handle and raise some of the deadlier species of spiders, snakes and fauna our nation has to offer ). while being taught how to operate the sks-rifle I missed the target but clipped a Emu in the distance, all the shot did was anger the large bird to which I was told " Back away inside, Quickly but Calmly" if it rushes me "drop and ball up", I wasn't going to do the latter due to a red ants nest close by and I had already witnessed them devour a kangaroo carcass in the span of mere hours and I was smaller than a Roo at the time. Side tangent - I also got to literally watch money wash away as the boulder containing a 2' x 1" pure green, red speckled harlequin opal-vein I found was set on sandstone so in the process of prepping it crumbled into nothingness leaving some small shale shards but mostly washed down the sink into history.

22:40 As a former self-employed childcare worker, the amount of people who struggle to find adequate care facilities so they can go back to the workforce here is dangerously high, I recently had to stop my services due to and i quote from the job agencies and department of Centerlink here " you need to charge your clients more per hour per child if you wish to continue being a self employed worker ". I would charge families based on their financial situation, those duel income single child families would be charged at Australia's fair work minimum of 22AUD/hr usually id accept 20AUD/hr where as those of single or low income families would be charged at a per/day or weekly rate of 50~200AUD. This might read well but sadly due to being on the social security system myself the gross income earnt was heavily effected by 50% of earnings removed from the social security payments + highest tax rate removed, equating to actually earning 20 cents to the dollar. for reference a friend of mine now pays 75/child/hr for care services equating to 800+/1200 paycheck going directly to childcare, their partners check covers the 700+/1200 for rent leaving very little to pay for general living and schooling expenses. this is happening across the nation and as far as I am aware nothing is being done to rectify this issue.

side note. renters have less children, homes have become too expensive and it's becoming too expensive for immigrants. i don't see our population exceeding 35m ever. not until this changes.

@terryp6396

To simplify the reasons:
1) Most of the continent is a desert
2) It was colonized extremely "late in the game"
3) Connected to reason 2, more British/European settlers probably chose Canada, the U.S. or even South Africa before they would choose going all the way to Australia.

@diamondinthesky4771

Well, it was terra nullius, except for the indigenous Australians. Then the population couldn't probably didn't even count the indigenous population, sadly.

It doesn't really do ANYTHING?
It's just a Booboisie suburb for The Former British Empire, busy digging up and selling the extractive and agricultural products to the rest of the World.
There are only so many people who want to live in that cul-de-sac beyond the edge of town, like John Belushi in "Neighbors".
