Why Lego Is So Expensive | So Expensive | Business Insider

Video Overview & Insights

Lego is the world's largest toy company but it's gained a reputation for being an expensive hobby. Since 2007, Lego has released dozens of sets that cost over $300. The most expensive Star Wars sets cost $850. And prices for vintage Lego sets can reach over $1,000. These high prices have caught the attention of thieves, who in some cases have stolen about $300,000 worth of Lego. So, how did we get here? How did Lego go from a children's toy to a collector's item? And why is it so expensive?

Got no issue with the cost of Lego, just make the kits count.
Recall the Starwars land speeder, do the work and make the kit work inside out...know what we mean!

07:39 - Adult Fans Of Lego

13:07 - Conventions

Another rule, and this one is most important: Each new kit must have new blocks (shapes) that are not found in previous sets. This forces the purchase of new kits in order to build what is on the box cover.

14:32 - Lego Resale Market

17:34 - Lego's Rise (Again)

Lego is the subject i usually brought up when it comes to American capitalism & their inferior products, they can't compete in model kits market like in Asia because their tech is inferior so they gotta make blocks.

22:54 - Why Lego Is So Expensive

If you don't open a set to build with the instructions or use the pieces for other projects, and you keep all the boxes sealed in a secret little room, then you're a reseller. Just be honest about it.

25:51 - Will Lego's Success Last?

28:04 - Credits

So glad people got into 3d printing, got myself a couple sets that were 3d printed by a 3rd party and you can't even tell the difference. Went from spending $1,500 on a UCS set to spending $120 on a nearly identical copy, so worth it.

No, your collection is worth ZERO dollars, they're just sorted into bins... in fact, it's worth less than nothing, cos you'd have to pay somebody to dispose of it after you died.
Jesus wept.
What you spent on it was probably thousands, but that don't mean that's what it's worth. The intrinsic value of Lego bricks is ZERO.

@jack-a-lopium
@

bricks and minifigs are scammers

@5vif

So Lego used to be for kids, but eternal-childhood adults didn't want to stop being those kids. I get the engineering value, but this is just them collecting little minifig accesories and cute little accessories. I have an old box of lego and that's it. I am genuinely concerned that as a father I won't be able to afford some lego for my kid some day because it's all being purchased by 40 year olds with maturity issues

@Metalminnion

At this point it should be allowed to steal since a kids toy is that expensive🤷‍♂️

@acrønix10711
@

Even back in the day around 2011 my parents used to say Lego was expensive & would not buy for me? I see now that they expensive but were they really that expensive back then

@acrønix10711
@

a set my grandma bought me for christmass when i was like 10 which orginally costed 14 dollars is now 1084 dollars, lego being so expenssive is the result of scalpers, artificial scarcity and such

@erykando

Now lego is going in the exact opposite direction, focusing on adults and making the most expensive sets ever. They all look beatifull but they also exceed my budget. It would be great if they could find a nice balance of making some quality cheaper sets.

@the_Madriks

Imagine paying that much for a pieces of plastic that cost 10 dollars to make
