AFFILIATES & REFERRALS

Well one of these TV OEMs would probably climb higher on the sales charts if they added a dedicated processor that would be strictly used for running the Smart TV OS & streaming apps. My 77S95C QD-OLED TizenOS Samsung TV is $4,500. But my $50 Fire TV Stick 4K Max is much faster when running the OS.

Simple things like turning up the volume & forward or rewinding streaming apps are so slow & laggy. It's infuriating. Some of us don't want to use a dedicated streaming device like a Chromecast Ultra or Fire TV Stick if we can simply use the same TV remote & interface. But not only are things laggy, but I've also noticed a lot of my streaming apps aren't playing back in 4K HDR when the content is available in that format.

I just watched The Thunderbolts* on Disney+ on my $4,500 QD-OLED TV & it wasn't in HDR10. I don't even know if it was in 4K because Samsung doesn't allow you to check the resolution on native streaming apps when I click the info button. Depending on the time of day, light in my room I change the brightness or turn on the Bluetooth speaker close to me to hear better late at night.

So I don't disturb anyone while still hearing everything fine myself. Or maybe I connect headphones. My point is I wanna use one remote for all of that instead of switching between remotes. But as I said the Samsung TizenOS UI experience sucks & lags. Why Samsung or any other TV OEM can't just add a dedicated processor for the user interface is beyond me. It's not that much more money if it's found in a $40 streaming stick.

Buying a TV with an integrated internal Roku/etc is like buying a monitor with an integrated internal PC motherboard with a specific OS permanently preinstalled.
Modularization of separate functions is a good thing. Especially for something as intrusive as a "Smart" TV interface. These things should not be married to the internals of the TV.

Personally I will never buy a TV that uses Tizen, no matter how good the TV otherwise is, just because I hate Tizen that much. Good move, Samsung.

More User Perspectives

3 years ago I bought a TCL 5 series Roku tv. Quickly I discovered that my then 2 year old Roku Ultra was WAY faster than the TCL tv, especially when watching recorded programs on youtube TV. So I set the tv to always go to the Roku ultra upon startup, and the only time I use the tv interface anymore is to watch local antenna tv shows that youtube tv doesn't carry. If only the TCL had the roku ultra's processor, that would be great.

I just discovered the one advantage my 2021 LG TV has over my Apple TV 4K 1st Gen. The WebOs interface is sluggish and even freezes at times, but the Youtube app built into the TV does play 4K60 HDR Youtube videos, where the 1st Gen Apple TV 4K does not (capping out at 1440p60 or 2160p30). The sound quality through those same videos is also slightly better through the TV. I don't know if this is worth upgrading the Apple TV to a newer model, but there it is. Thank you stats for nerds for pointing this out.

I watched 3 videos on my phone, while my new LG 50 in tv spins in circles. Im within my 90 day return window. Probably dismount and return. What a hassle. Constant waiting ✋

I really want to jailbreak mine and flash it with something faster. Alternative is a Display Screen.

@Jin-Ro
@

I don't mind the smart end, but give me some serious IO. Give me RCA and Component, and more than 2 HMDI ports. I wish though that they'd make a tv with an actually good OS. It'd be nice to not have to plug in a chromecast to take up one of the HDMI ports

@TurtleSauceGaming

I stopped using my tv .. it's super trash and slow. Honestly... I just want monitor, and use my Roku for example. But bro... F the corpos

I wish it was still actually possible to just get a "dumb" TV. All the "smart" features are better served by other equipment I already have.

I love all the robot dongs plugged into my tv

@keel3r433

Why is there a delay just turning a smart Vizio tv on or off? It's rediculus. You push any button on the remote and wait 5 seconds for the tv to respond!

@dropbear4973

I got a smart TV for a couple thousand and very soon after a software "update" came to remove some of the features. Then another came and removed YouTube. Never again will I buy a smart TV.

This is why I run Netflix from my Playstation 5 not my 1000 dollar 4K OLED LG TV. Netflix on my TV is slow as hell and video and audio are not very well synced. Wtf LG?

@Ignisan_66

End of 2022 here and yeah, smar tvs still suck.

@janis23
@

This is primarily the reason why I keep both of my tvs connected to a mini pc and a gaming pc respectively. I have a sony x85j and while the menu system is nice and intuitive, all the built in apps like disney+ and prime video are slower on the tv itself than if I just my computer's browser. Sure there's some loss in video quality since it's in game mode but at least it doesn't jitter or take forever to load.

ETAPrime has a lot of of in depth looks at a ton of mini pcs varying through prices and you can get a pretty nice one for cheap off ebay and just slap it to your living room tv and you're good to go.

can one add an external processor to his smart TV?

@randomescu
@

This makes me glad that I use old fashioned crt tvs instead. They have buttons on the TV itself, inputs other than HDMI, practically zero input lag, no spying, and no bs drm. 'Smart' tvs are just dumb scams. When my family moves to Tennessee, I will try to get a JVC D-Series crt tv to replace my current Sanyo. Man, it is quite odd how backwards we have went when it comes to display technology.....

One would think that if selling user data is their main market, that they would want to incentives people to use those features?

For me, I have a 6/7 year old LG smart TV being driven by a firestick 4K and the image quality is plenty good! I'm actually pushing 10 bit 4K to it and it looks just plain great.

@joshlikescola

Worst thing I ever bought was a smart TV destroyed 2 new sets of earphones that worked on everything before connecting them to it. No buttons audio out jacks access to volume control in the menu etc like normal TV's have

@RavenVargas27

We have a smart Tv with android OS built-in. It's actually pretty fast.
You can use apps like YouTube, other streaming apps. As it runs android, you can also install mobile apps like Zoom and others.

@superninja2022

my family has a smart tv and my family does not care about the smart features of the tv, we treat it like a normal tv and when we get board we turn on our digital tv box and watch some news or blast some
songs on our speaker
