Why the World Cup Is So Expensive

Video Overview & Insights

This year’s World Cup has more teams (48) and more host nations (3) than any previous World Cup. It’s also going to make FIFA billions of dollars, but complications including dynamic ticket pricing and mounting costs are leaving ordinary fans priced out and host cities under financial strain.

They brought the World Cup to a country that calls football "soccer"...

The worst World Cup ever.

— @thenascx7

The tournament's economics are further complicated by politics. US President Donald Trump has placed himself at the center of the event, even receiving a newly invented “FIFA peace prize” from FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Meanwhile the US-Israel war with Iran has triggered an energy crisis that’s squeezing supplies of jet fuel, leading to higher prices and canceled flights for fans already wary of Trump’s immigration policies.

The pricing is consistent with the policies of the current administration. As Marco Rubio said, going to America is a privilege, and that privilege will be reserved for those who have plenty of money to spend.

Most of the points on this video is valid. And I appreciate it. I want to discuss one point from my perspective that it makes sense to me as an American, which is immigration, there is nothing wrong of being protective about it, it is a huge factor that causes chaos in the last year. And Yes prices are insane and shouldn’t be like that.

@Tommah1000

Going to the FIFA World Cup in the United States will be a miserable experience for even the most passionate international Football fans. The obstacles to enjoyment include: U.S. visa paperwork and fees, expensive and poor domestic airline service, large paperwork and licensing requirements to rent a vehicle (needed for transportation), heavy handed fourth amendment violating security at the games, the pitch absorbing so much ball and player energy that fewer than normal in play goals are scored, restaurant dining that is understaffed, heavily enforced alcohol use and purchase laws that make enjoyment of alcohol difficult and risky, and a TSA search on the way out of the country. The U.S. government and corporations will be very proud of there efforts to "ruin the beautiful game atmosphere". The press on this world cup will be worse than a broken metal stamping machine.

I live in Dallas. If I were to go to every match at AT&T stadium including the semifinal for the same seats as I would in a Cowboys game, I would be out about $17,000 USD. Keep in mind that doesn't include parking, hotels, exorbitant concessions, airfare, land transport, and whatever else they could pull off. I could buy season tickets for the Cowboys and FC Dallas for half that much.

Instead of being angry about not getting my tickets early enough, I will take that money I saved and actually travel to England and Spain to see the Premier League, La Liga, and Champions League matches in a proper environment.
