lol this isn't because tickets are cheap. lists dirt cheap prices. $85 average means tickets are often well below that. I haven't been to an NFL game in about a decade because a game against a bad team starts at $250 in the nosebleeds and against a rival they start at $450. So easily averaging in the low thousands per ticket. if you take into account the colleges that dont pull 100k crowds or dont even have stadiums that hold 20k people the number goes way down kind of like the premier league's small market teams

This is because they are not sports, they are registered scripted entertainment businesses.

They are all franchise leagues in which everyone gets a cut of the winnings. Like a chain of fast food stores - they all get the same memo - and practice playing out the scripts they are given by the league bosses.

once you get past "omg a college team coach gets paid what??" it's literally just... a sense of community, affiliation/identity & local rivalries, quite literally the most fundamental qualities that make sport what it is & often what ends up lacking in franchise american sports where there's 20-30 professional teams with significantly less stakes in a country the size of a continent.

One thing that I think is worth also talking about is there are only 32 (plus 8 UFL teams and a couple of other really small leagues that are dwarfed by the NFL) NFL teams, vs ~ 130 FBS college teams along with FCS, D2, D3, NJCA, and NAIA. If the NFL wanted to supplant college they could do it and implement a relegation system, but it would require the team owners to give up their monopolies for no benefit for themselves. As long as the NFL is controlled by the team owners, college will be where sports are centered in the US.

I went to UM in 2004-2008. At 3:00 they said that it was 100,000 until 2020. Not true. Sometimes they counted tickets sold.

Most college games are blowouts. The sport used to have soul and tradition but now its just a shittier version of the NFL masquerading as "college."

This is really quite ridiculous. You’ve chosen average attendance for one but also did the whole of college football yet just one league of football here in the uk. There is 92 professional teams and hundreds of semi pro teams up and down the country that all command support regularly. Per capita it’s clearly far bigger.

I hate how American sporting organisations, mostly with motorsport, always have to mess around with broadcasting rights and all of that. It’s a massive waste of time, the viewing product is usually horrendous and you get more ads than green flag laps. Anyway, I don’t really watch ball sports but I’m going to assume that all these issues are the same across the board, or maybe not, I have no clue.

To drop some info for the Europeans in the comment section:

1. Americans are very used to advertisements. Our country literally runs on money, therefore we're all finding ways to make it (advertising is a great corporate move that is harmless in the long run).
2. Americans are different from you. We have different identities and cultures. Please get along with us, as not all of us are the disrespectful kind (or you'll be digging a very deep hole for yourself).
3. College football is the exact same as International soccer. Both have crazy environments and ridiculous energy. If insist on hating or discrediting American football in favor of soccer, I suggest attending a Penn State Whiteout game or even an average Alabama or Georgia game before speaking.
4 WE ARE NOT DISCREDITING SOCCER. It is still a beautiful sport, however, America used to be culturally isolated for near half a century and thus we have developed our own culture that doesn't include soccer as a top sport.

Don't they play only 5 home NFL or college american football games a year(I don't know exact figure but know it's super low),. It's a lot easier to fill a stadium with that many fans for 5 games than for 19 homes games+cup games+european competitions(which can add up to 30-35 home games) on top of fans also watching national team games

This video is interesting and all, but I have to critique it on its efficiency. It's a 7 minute video that speant the first minute repeating the same three facts.

1) NFL is popular

2) It's the most popular entertainment product in America

3) College Football sells the most tickets.

These facts were repeated several times before getting to the promise of the videos title, which is why the rest of the world thinks it's weird.
