Why Tipping Is So Out Of Control In The U.S.

Tipping is insane in the USA. it feels like EVERYONE expects a tip nowadays

Working at a warehouse, manufacturing company etc. How often did you received tips?

I'm not getting any tips for my work, so why I have to tip someone else?

Tips system in US completely booked and have to be fixed or canceled at all!

DIsgusting - typical greedy American Corporations - when are you all going to wake up ! Guess you're all feeling GREAT at the moment. By the way I won't have to tip my doctor because I live in a civilised country where I get free medical care.

The only people I feel obligated to tip are people who personally bring me something or bring me somewhere. So it goes like this. If they bring food to my table, I tip. If I have to go to the counter, I don't. If they pick me up or drop me off, at a location of my choosing (cab ride, uber, etc.) I tip. If I have to meet them at a location and don't have a choice as to where I'm dropped off (bus or train), no tip.

coffee shops are the worst. You did your job at the counter, and now you want 20%. Subway is the same. Did you do literally anything else beyond what you are paid to do here? no

Since when are we supposed to tip on carry out?

I was at the airport yesterday in USA and went to buy a coffe and sandwich cause I was really hungry after long trips. Did not have cash and paid using a card but they literally wanted me to give tip and the minimum option was $10 dollars. I said no (that was crazy amount of money more than the 50% of my purchase). Also we do no tip in Mexico if is food for takeaway but looks like in USA you have to give a tip even if it is for takeaway. When I said no the employees they became super rude with me. This is really sad. Also I’m not in a great economic position since I am unemployed right now. Really sad and depressing how rude people are with you if you do not give them money. 💰

The problem could be largely solved if they repeal the Tip Credit but the "no tax on tips", pushed by Trump, Kamala Harris, and Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), makes the situation worse by buying off tipped workers so they oppose repealing the tip credit.

Tips are a personal choice and shouldn't be forced on you. Corporate greed.

People used to say, “if you can’t afford to tip then don’t go out.” And that’s what’s happening, restaurants are empty these days .

Pay cash.

Pay in cash, then you decide on the tip amount.

I would rather businesses charge what they actually need to charge and pay their employees properly. Then let me decide whether I’m still interested once the real price is reflected. Raise the price if needed, but make it transparent.



What used to be a small gesture for good service has turned into an expectation everywhere. Coffee shops, takeout counters, retail checkouts, delivery apps. You’re constantly prompted to tip 18 to 25 percent, even when there’s little or no actual service involved. That’s not appreciation. That’s pressure.



It also creates an awkward situation where customers are made to feel responsible for someone else’s income instead of the employer paying a stable wage. You’re forced into a decision that feels social and moral, not just transactional.



And when owners say they would have to raise prices, let’s be honest about what that usually means. They want to protect their profit margins while shifting labor costs onto customers. A lot of these owners are not exactly struggling. You see them driving nice cars and doing just fine, while workers depend on tips and customers get guilted into covering the gap.



It makes people not want to go out anymore, especially people living paycheck to paycheck in places with an extreme cost of living, like San Francisco. Dining out or grabbing coffee already costs enough. Adding constant tip pressure on top of inflated prices makes the whole experience feel exhausting instead of enjoyable.

If the tip is not on the bill, as is the case in some civilized places in this world, then IT IS OPTIONAL and you have no right to make even a gesture that suggests a request for a tip, and yet you must provide service as good as someone else who tips you.

What makes me laugh is most of the time the person behind the counter doesn’t even have the brains to thank you for your purchase

If I tip 15% for my $12 burger, and now the same burger costs $18, I still tip 15%.

And guess what? You just got a raise.
I'm actually considering changing my tipping technique to 10%, as tipping has become ridiculous. If you don't like it, find another job. The restaurant should just raise the price of the meal.., and we can get rid of the tipping.

Ain't giving much tip 15% max unless you are actually nice or provided worth it service, at some point it just becomes greedy to ask at random times.

I never have a problem tipping if I do because I know how much to tip on my own terms. So maybe the problem is with others who are not quite sure what they're doing? First of all, when I walk into a restaurant I tell them where I want to sit, not where they place me. How quick you get me the food? How good the food is. How quick you are with the check. All this can get you a tip or Will not get you a tip

Nobody like give hard earn money for free

I'm opposed to tipping. I view it the same as BRIBERY. Employer should pay their employees for doing a job, and employees should do the job they are hired to do.

Why do we need to tip others to do their job when it's the employer who should be paying their employees the correct wages for their labor?!?

The federal tipped wage ($2.13) has not increased since 1991. Employers are just using higher tipping to increase their own profits instead of paying a decent wage. Now I just cook at home. It's higher quality and instead of a 30% price increase they get 30% of nothing.

We shouldn’t have to tip at all….we are paying for the goods or service or both…maybe the restaurant or establishment should pay and not pass it on to the customer…I am SICK of aubway, tropical cafe drive thru, coffee, order at the counter and pick up when your number is called, salad works, chipolte, wal mart self check out, chaps, drive thru Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks…….and I m sick of places where I do traditionally tip starting with 18% and it’s difficult to do a custom tip at the traditional 15%……I m also sick of places like walk in nail salons demanding cash for payment and telling me how much tip they are entitled to…..they tried this with me last week after I did pay my bill in cash…grabbing my arm to bring me to an in house cash atm for more tip….I took my money and walked out….they chased me down the side walk

That’s why when I ask 4 tips as a joke I always keep it at 5 bucks geez

agree tipping is out of control, not my responsibility to pay for employees wages.

It doesn’t embarrass me not to give a tip.

I have virtually stopped going out anymore & chose to make my food at home. I do not mind paying for over and above service but getting a drink at a drive thru? No. If I have to walk up or drive up to get something, I am not tipping.
