WTF Happened to Jet LI's THE ONE?!

Video Overview & Insights

In the year 2000, long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was hopping from parallel world to parallel world- Jet Li was tasked with taking on dozens of alternate versions of himself from other universes and fighting for his life as there can only be one. Which Jet Li will reign victorious? And furthermore- WTF Happened to The One?!

Still Better than Doctor Strange 2

4:07 now you knew who's the real master of vergil on dmc season 2

grew up on chinese kung fu movies.... this one was way too over the top and really took a dump on jet li's resume
action was cheesy and lame... tried too hard to copy stuff from the matrix... watch his previous movies and its a different world
the music also felt out of place in every scene

I liked it because I did Xing Yi, although his version of Xing Yi was..............odd. Bad Gabe does Xing Yi, good does Bagua.

??? The One is cemented in the top 5 Jet Li films without a doubt. Fearless is my All time favorite. I can't really think of any bad Jet Li movies actually. Unleashed, Black Mask, LW4, Cradle 2 the Grave. All great! I mean.. he was criminally underutilized in The Mummy 3..

One of my favorite movies for sure, only problem was the short length of the movie, this was definitely where the characters should've been explored

I wish they could make a Gabriel YuLaw character in a fighting game like the recent Shaolin vs Wu Tang games!
A game where EVERY fighting character from ANY movie comes out! Imagine?!?

I’m certain I watched this with my dad (he’s a huge martial arts movie fan) and it was a fun movie back in the day. His last line will be the funniest thing ever. Watching it again, I was so confused. Maybe I was doing other things, and it wasn’t a good movie, but it was still fun to watch.

Disagree with some of the video. The film might have been criticised at the time, but the film was a big hit with its target audiences and holds up today but time. Especially compared with the trash we’re fed nowadays from Hollywood. The One is a banger

I remember when this movie came out I was 10 but I still liked it and it was the movie that made me a huge Jet Lee fan.

10:03 I love how his teammates, knows that there's something wrong, though he doesn't know exactly what, but he knows that Gabe wouldn't kill someone in cold blood. He thinks he's sick.

This movie is real world evidence that wormholes exist and we all go sucked into one about the time of this film's release. Nothing else possibly explains current events and the state of the universe.

The final scene on the prison universe with the endless mob ascending the pyramid to fight Yulaw is epic in the best of ways.

I honestly think there's a "silent cult" of The One fans! It's just FUN over-the-top sci-fi action. It's not everyone's thing but it's fun. In a way I think if it came out 5 years LATER, it wouldn't have just slipped by people's notice as "a wannabe Matrix movie". It doesn't have the depth to really drive a long conversation about it, but it is BOTH of two things you mentioned: Total guilty pleasure for excuse plot-action, and "getting something out of" the good character moments with Gugino, Lindo and Statham plus just Li's personal performance. I'd actually say Yulaw is not your classic_ mustache twirler, but a kind of sarcastic jaded nihilist, and it works for me. Statham definitely gives a vibe (especially knowing his stardom in retrospect) "it feels like he's bigger than this role", but he gets a couple good moments anyway. His line delivery "you and him...are IT." has always stuck with me and I mutter it to myself whenever there are only two items left of something haha.

Also love how arbitrary some of the multiverse "rules" feel 😆 You get that feeling in some sci-fi like the creator was really excited about some details they came up with and didn't quite bother to hone it to only what was necessary for the story flow. Like why 125 universes, why are some of the dudes wearing radiation suits, who were those "dignitaries" watching the attempt to consign Yulaw to Hades the first time... Can feel offputting and lower budget to some, but I love it.

Also you did not cover the most guilty pleasure part of it all: Yulaw wields two motorcycles like clubs. This movie's awesome, QED ❤

Super powered humans all growing stronger eventually exponentially due to one with dark ambitions being placed in a wild location. Their abilities growing as they hit singularity.... those abilities being refined through the lense of what was a multiversal constant their adoration of martial arts....

One "cursed" to become a god of hell. That's just doooope

The One was much more believable than Kiss of the Dragon. If this movie had double the budget, but kept all same cast and crew/production it would have been a real banger.

It sucks that people hated this movie. It was one of my top 5 after Once Upon a Time in China, and Fist of Legend.

It’s a generation of kids who don’t know this movie exist and gotta face the fact that they were born in the wrong generation. This movie came out during a time where rock music was topping the charts and you heard Drowning Pool in almost every movie/show.

What was unique about this movie was that it was a fictional sci-fy and starred a full-blooded Chinese male lead in a heroic role and had him married to a white American woman. Even now, that is a rare pairing in Hollywood. You see lots of Asian women with white American boyfriends or spouses, or you see half Asian men, like Henry Golding, as male leads, with Asian or white women.
Blue Bayou paired Steven Yeung with Alicia Vikander, but Yeung's character wasn't a hero, he was getting deported after having been adopted as a child.
This movie with Jet Li was so different.

This movie and the concept of a multiverse with parallel versions of people is an awesome concept you could do so much with potentially, and what they did do in this movie showed that off, there needs to be sequels or better yet a TV show based off it would be awesome to flesh out the idea more
