World War I lasted from 1914 to 1918.
It began after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary on June 28, 1914.
More than 70 million military personnel were mobilized during the war.
About 16 million people (soldiers and civilians) died as a result of the conflict.
The war was mainly fought between the Allies (including France, United Kingdom, and Russia) and the Central Powers (including Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire).
It was known as the "War to End All Wars", though another major conflict, World War II, began just 21 years later.
Trench warfare was a defining feature of the war, with soldiers spending months in muddy trenches.
The first tanks were used in combat during WWI, introduced by the United Kingdom in 1916.
Poison gas, including chlorine and mustard gas, was used on a large scale for the first time.
The war ended on November 11, 1918, when an armistice was signed. This date is commemorated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in many countries.
