I lived and worked in York (Uni) in 1980, came Back annually till 1998. Absolutely love the place.
Next attempt to visit March 2018; cancelled after having watched the diluvian torrent of endless masses of tourists suffocate the dear old place beyond any recognition.
York had evidently caught either Venice Virus or Barcelona Bug. Pity and shame, but not my cuppa ...

Spent two nights there a couple of months ago and didnt get to see a lot but really enjoyed it so going back in September for another four nights when we hope to see a lot more including the National Railway Museum. Anyway thanks for some great ideas for our next visit.

I cannot recommend York highly enough. My best advice would be to spend at least a week there, as there is so much to see. My wife and I always spend our annual holidays there. We have been visiting York since 2005 and we have no where near seen everything that York has to offer. I do hope that at some point in time you do visit York, and there is no doubt whatsoever you will want to re-visit York over and over again.

I've recently started watching your videos of the UK and absolutely love the detail narrative of each one. I was fortunate to go to York and Whitby in Spring of 2011 for a week.. Watched both of your videos tonight and it was wonderful to remember my time there, but realized there is so much to see. York Art Gallery was one of my favorites. I hope you go back to York in the Spring or summer when the weather is good. Wonderful travels! 😊

How many months did you have to wait for a relatively sunny day? I would love to visit England but then the weather puts a damper on that fantasy and I choose a sunny tropical island instead.

It's mostly Georgian and Victorian, judging by the architecture. I can think of more Medieval cities in England.

Not like that now, very dirty and run down. Many empty shops and beggars/homeless most of whom are con artists praying on tourists. Born in York lived here all my life and no longer proud to say that.

Obscure fact: when the Lloyds Bank building in Pavement was being built in 1972, an archaeological excavation unearthed the largest coprolite (fossilised turd) ever discovered. It was probably of Viking origin, 8 inches long, 2 inches wide and probably caused its original owner a fair bit of discomfort. You can see it in the Jorvik Viking Centre.
Also worth a look are the mediaeval Guildhall and the Mansion House, the latter being the oldest in the UK and the nominal home of the Lord Mayor of York. The Lord Mayor is the second citizen of England, the Lord Mayor of London being no1. Only York and London can call their Mayors "Lord Mayors" because York is England's second city.

I've lived in the City of York since 1978, mostly in the villages to the north of the city. I worked there all my working life: not once have I ever wished to leave. And in those 40 years, there are several things mentioned on here that I've never got round to visiting. This fantastic video shows just what an incredible place York is.
It also has amazing pubs (try the Blue Bell, tiny and unchanged for over 120 years; featured at 15.39) and some fabulous cafes and restaurants.

Really enjoyed your stuff on York, im born in Manchester with Yorkshire relatives, my uncle looked after the Howard's cars including Rollsroyce from Castle Howard around 1950s , my dad often cycled with friends from Oldham and stayed with Uncle John and wife Helen, they had 4 sons? Cheers 🍻 from Australia 🇦🇺

Medieval England is my favourite historical period to learn about so I'll need to take a trip from London down to York for a few days to see all of this. Thanks for the info.
