Animated Portrayal of Placenta Accreta Spectrum

Video Overview & Insights

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a potentially life-threatening condition in which the placenta is abnormally adherent to the uterus. Degrees of PAS (accreta, increta, percreta) are defined and illustrated. The animation describes the importance of preplanning a delivery and surgical treatment at a specialized tertiary care center with a multidisciplinary team. #PlacentaAccretaSpectrum #JohnsHopkins Learn more: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/gynecology_obstetrics/

I had a beautiful and peaceful pregnancy journey for 7 months. Then my baby stopped kicking but I still could feel her move in me. After a week my contractions started and after a few hours dealing with the intense waves, I felt my water broke. But it was not water, it was blood. Long story short. I delivered vaginally a dead and almost half rotten baby in the hospital. I lost blood and was shaking but for some reason I got no blood transfusion. I am home now and try to overcome this gigantic trauma. My breasts are full of milk and I have no one to feed. I constantly ask myself if my baby decided not to come so that I can survive?

But where does the bleeding come from? Does it come from a rip from the organ? Does the organ try to separate on its own? Is the bleeding from a rip IN the organ? I don't understand where the bleeding comes from.

I am expecting my second baby in May. My last ultrasound showed my placenta is lower than normal 😞 my midwife told me it could shift upward as the uteris expands but if not, I may need a C-section and I am a bit nervous about that happening. I pray my baby is safely delivered 🙏❤️

Nice a new word, myometrium. I can't imagine when I would ever use the word. I mean the lining of the uterus on a cellular level, then the connection between that and the muscles.

When would that ever come up in a conversation. 😂

I had PAS with my baby born in Aug. I had to have a cesarean hysterectomy. I had to have iron transfusions while I was pregnant. I also had to have 2 blood transfusions while on the OR table. After surgery I got ileus and bowl obstruction. 😮‍💨

I’m currently a pre nursing student working on a labor and delivery floor and recently we had a mom who had to have a hysterectomy because of placenta percreta. So I came here so that I could gain more knowledge about this topic

I had a completely undiagnosed placenta accreta in 2014, a D&C, and 4 blood transfusions. No prior c sections, births, or scar tissue of any kind. Absolutely terrifying experience.

I had undiagnosed placenta accreta and went for a section at 38 weeks due to past pregnancy problems. At the birth I heard a surgeon ask 'should this be happening' and the other surgeon said no i'll take over......... and then like about 15 other staff came rushing in and the anaethatist and me had to chat alot to make sure I was ok. They took my womb out of my body still attached to try to massage it to stop the bleeding and after about four hours sewed me back up whole. Then I started to bleed again and the had to unstitch me and do a hysterectomy. It was very traumatic. They said to my husband we need to do this husterectomy to save her life and I was like yes, ok, but they didnt take much notice of what I was saying. I was wheeled out after around 5 hours and the surgeon said if you want more babies you will have to find a surrogate!! After three miscarriages and a baby boy who died of Potters Syndrome that was the last thing on my mind. I had been given 9 pints by staff squeezing the blood into me and was a bit sore!
