Your body has a built-in, natural ability to calm anxiety. Learn four simple, body-based ways you can calm anxiety by turning on the parasympathetic nervous system.
Calming anxiety is something you can learn to do when you learn how the parasympathetic response works as an anti-anxiety reaction.
Thank you for your help. I really do feel better now after watching your video. My day was unbelivably stressful and I feel calm.
Anxiety, PTSD, trauma, and other intense emotions are rooted in the nervous system, specifically the sympathetic response, but our body has a built-in natural ability to calm anxiety by turning on the parasympathetic nervous system.

This might just be me but when Emma says, "In a previous video I taught you 4 skills that send a message from your body to your brain to calm down" (09:35), I have no idea which video she refers to. She mentioned deep belly breathing in one of the previous videos from this course, but I don't know where she mentioned the other 3. Can someone help me out? I'm following the videos of this course in order.

I have found that from a younge age. I dealt with anxiety and depression through masturbation and sex. I realize now it was sex so much as the dopamine that is given during sex. 40 years of this never realizing why. So yes sexy can help.but can be a slippery slope

I got through another video. Emotionally for me its challenging. As grief as a soothing trusted friendship. Separating from that friendship is support. It's time well spent greifs kindness too before saying goodbye. A trust it there if needed. What I am going through needs fun therapy. Fun is not a four letter word: )

I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
interstitial journaling was super duper helpful for me, and 10 minutes of timered meditation every morning. truly unbelievable how much it helped, checking in and practicing saying Okay to thoughts and feelings
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe

The calming down skills you've mentioned namely Valsalva maneuver, peripheral vision and yawn are not in the previous videos of the playlist, if possible please link the videos to the description for easy acess
I greatly appreciate your content. Thank you so much! I also really appreciate that you no longer use music in your videos. As you know, for many of us, it can be VERY challenging to finish truly helpful, informative, and insightful videos such as yours because of distracting, unnecessary, and even grating music and sounds. 🙉 Your voice and message are enough 😊

@skpetlifeIve heard that box (4 seconds each way) breathing is also a good way to calm down

@geraldinemurphy9489I've seen people do that tapping but never knew how to do it, now I know how and where and everything and it did help me.
@SolMeetsBodySometimes anxiety feels overwhelming because we try to control every thought. I found it more helpful to let thoughts pass, almost like clouds in the sky, instead of wrestling with them. That shift alone can be calming.❤
@Think-Less-Live-MoreThis is exactly what I needed simple, science-backed tools to actually calm anxiety instead of just coping. 🧠💆♀ Love how practical this is!

@shreeyakumaresanI’m really enjoying your videos. Thank you for creating such uplifting and insightful content. I’m currently in my fourth year of a psychology degree, and I am volunteering as a crisis supporter, which has been keeping me extremely busy. It’s definitely hard work, and at one point, the stress started to take a toll on my sleep and overall well-being. That’s when I made the decision to take back control and work with the stress and anxiety I was experiencing, rather than against it. I began paying attention to the early signs, like when my body tensed up or when my mind started spinning stories of danger that weren’t actually there. Developing awareness of my emotions and gently challenging those automatic thoughts helped me realise that much of what I was feeling came down to perceived threats, not real ones. Now, I make a conscious effort to take frequent breaks, do things I enjoy, and carve out time for gratitude and spirituality. This shift has brought more balance into my life and significantly reduced my stress and anxiety. I’ve come a long way, and while it’s still a work in progress, your videos have been a meaningful part of that journey. Thank you again.
