Do I need more than compost? I see a lot of other folks putting in worm castings or peet moss (though I try to avoid using peet moss to lessen the negative environmental impact).

Does anyone know if you can use mulch for the bottom istead of leaves?

So I'm in Australia sub tropical. I'm a gardener but fail on spuds so I will try this. It's autumn here so if I gather leaves and some bought compost I can get started ? I am only 10 years in subtropical as I lived in southern Australia where growing was easy. Humid here.

I have been saving my chicken feed bags. I saw a lady making shopping bags out of them. I saw no reason that I could not make grow bags from a never ending supply of feed bags.

When is the best time to plant them and how long do they take to grow ?

I never knew that about planting levels and that they only produce tubers at that level. Thats really interesting and I will, obviously, follow your advice.

Thank you for this, I have a cabin in Scotland and basically I wanted to put raised rows on top of cardboard to grow veg in and this method looks like it will work really well. I subscribed. I have so much rotted down manure from our horses that I really think I'll never run out. So I'm set to do this.

Interesting. Sorry to see from the comments that so many ppl are having such a hard time growing potatoes! I've been very blessed in recent years. A friend tilled up a large patch of ground in what used to be their farm's coward (holding pen right outside the barn, basically), and which also had gotten a bunch of topsoil from nearby field washed onto it once. Had been just lawn for many years. He then couldn't use or manage the whole space and regardless had wanted to share it with friends, so I've been able to grow my big, bulk crops over there instead of in the horrible, horrible (dead, compacted sand) garden at my rental. Potatoes have been amazing! Just hilling them traditionally and topping that with hay or straw mulch. I had gotten some compost and did same at home, at 1st too, but they only did ok and had terrible potato beetle pressure here. I've noticed anytime the soil under them is very compacted, or wet and anaerobic, they have much worse time w the bugs ... .

hello viking. can we reuse the soil medium after harvesting the potatoes? or perhaps we use it for another crop like broccoli in order to avoid disease?

You can always put the bags in boxes for stability

Would this work with 100% compost?
