Dennis Schröder has a big part in the win. He was leading the team and pulling all up to his mindset. He might be very demanding and sometimes obnoxious but he has the spirit of a winner. Some player said it out loud - without Dennis they would not have believed in themselves enough to become champions.

Good video but as a German I have to add a little thing. There are always regional powerhouses from smaller cities like Bamberg or Ulm or Braunschweig where BB is deeply rooted that contribute. There are for example six players in the current European champion squad that either went through the young player programme in Bamberg or Braunschweig (Obst, Thiemann, Kratzer, Schröder, Theis) or played for those teams ( + Lo) The 6+6 rule has been a blessing for Basketball in Germany.

Hey so I work at a pretty big sports Club and the surge in Kids wanting to play basketball in the last 2-3 years is pretty big because of these recent wins. I can imagine germany only getting stronger at basketball

Look, it's just FIBA, everyone calm down. If they start winning at the Olympics when all the NBA players are in then they're a big deal.

It sucks big time that you can easier watch NBA than the BBL.

You can only access BBL by a streaming service where you have to subsidise 3rd league football licences with it.

Why Handball and Volleyball are huge in Germany, but will be replaced by Basketball in the near future!

When it comes to the popularity and prevalence of sports, I believe there are four key factors.

1) Media presence: Football is clearly ahead in terms of broadcasting time alone. But basketball is a close second because the sport is telegenic and produces attractive images. I'd bet that basketball content is much better suited to social media than handball.

2) Tradition: Nothing beats football, which is literally played in every village. But then handball comes in a close second and volleyball in third place. That plays a big role. The likelihood of local companies sponsoring the local team increases enormously if the company owner used to play the sport himself.

3) Accessibility: Nothing beats football here, for which you need nothing more than a small piece of grass and two rucksacks as goal substitutes. But then basketball comes in a close second, because all you need is a house wall, a basket and very little space.

4) The dream of fame: The importance of the theoretical possibility of a career in a particular sport is often underestimated when it comes to whether someone sticks with that sport. Every child of average height and without extraordinary athleticism knows that they will never be a professional basketball player. This causes many to give up early on. In football, you can become the greatest player of all time at 1.70 metres tall. From the slight dribbler, who is even smaller, to the tall defender, there is a place on the field for almost every child. In the best sense, there is something democratic about this that basketball will never completely offer.

And yet, there's a bright light when the MVP of the tournament is hardly six feet tall and the revolution of the three point shot equalizes the playground in way we've never seen before.

So, all of this together gives us plenty of reason to hope that basketball is well on its way to becoming the number two sport in Germany. And with a population of 84 million, that should be enough to ensure an exciting future.

You could even argue that Basketball isn´t or wasn´t the #2 Sport in Germany.
Formula 1, Biathlon, Ski Jumping, Handball or even Tennis are all in the mix.

To give you some empirical insight of our local German Two Circles studies. In terms of of popularity football is clearly tier 1, handball is tier 2 with a significant drop. icehockey and basketball is currently tier 3 with both being more or less on par a bit behind handball.

German Basketball Bundesliga BBL has less than 3 Million „fans“ - probably rather 1.5M depending on „fan-definition“.

1 out of 10 Germans show a broader interest in our DBB National Squad.

So the basketball community in Germany is definitely small, but hopefully it gets some traction due to the WC and EC title win now.

The 6 + 6 rule should be illegal in the EU.

Previously in football every country in the EU would only allow 3 players who were not from that country.

Then a player went to court and won a legal case called the Bosmann ruling (hopefully I spelt that right).

But now after the Bosmann ruling all teams in the EU are limited to 3 non-EU players, but you can't discriminate against any EU play.

The EU has freedom of movement of people, so the 6+6 basketball rule is illegal.
