I just barley avoided the same fate in Maui in 2013. I was drinking at Rice Park in up country Maui (Kula) with no where to go and some local kids all high AF on meth (ice) and sat at my table sizing me up I assumed. One of them I happened to give a ride to and a few buds a while back which is what saved me at first. He recognized me and told his buddies I was a cool haole. So I let my guard down and shared my beer but ran out fast and needed more so I gave them some money as they said they were going anyway and a couple of the guys stayed so I was not concerned. Then after an unusual amount of time the two guys just got up and walked away and so I followed. There was about 25 young methed out locals fighting each other for fun like the movie Fight Club. I watched for a few minutes and realized my money was gone. The last fight the guy losing yelled out "Pau pau already!" Pau means finished. But the cracked out local would not stop until his friends stopped him and that's when I heard him yell, "Where the fuck is that haole!?" He was ready to kill and thought of me. I was just out of sight in the shadows. I suddenly realized the trouble I was in and had to skillfully dodge those guys until I found a place to hide. I was not used to the locals on Maui because I had lived on the Big I a long time before Maui and made so many local friends I thought that was normal. NOPE! I was very lucky to be friends with locals period. It makes me sad what has happened to just about every culture of brown or black people in the world. I am 6 years sober and have no desire to get in situations like that again.

Driving counterclockwise on the "death highway" is not a great idea! That road is very narrow and having driven it myself clockwise I can tell you that was challenge enough, one that I would not repeat. Best to leave that one off the list!
