Ken Paxton leads John Cornyn 48-40 among likely GOP primary voters, but the general election math gets ugly fast: 24% of Cornyn voters say they'd back Democrat James Talarico if Paxton is the nominee. If there is one thing that is true about elections is that republicans vote for the republican. They may be butt hurt now, but once Talarico pivots to center his message on republican voters, he'll depress his base and get beat by a landslide.

For generations now, Republicans have been "screwing themselves over" by having internal dissent in which the radical far-right wing of the Party loses out to a new even-more-radical even-farther-right wing. The result of this process is that they hold the presidency, majorities in both houses of Congress, a supermajority on the Supreme Court, and comparable advantages at the state level in a majority of states. Empirically, we should consider the possibility that maybe it's not such a bad strategy for them.

@cpaul9269Individual fundraising isn't the determinate stat - GOP PACs and Super-PACs have OVERWHELMINGLY beaten Dem equivalents in fundraising. THAT'S what's important to recognize here. That 24% of Cornyn supporters who would vote for Talarico instead of Paxton is the BIG number here! If that holds, then Talarico has a great chance here!

Fuck it, I'm changing my prediction from Lean D to Likely D (bordering on Lean). In other words, I don't just think Texas goes blue, I'm pretty sure of it.
