This small no dig garden measures just 25 square metres (270 square feet), yet it continues to provide abundant harvests through high summer. In this tour I show what we are picking now, including cucumbers, herbs and beetroot, together with new plantings of salads, chicories and endives for autumn harvests.
This year has been exceptionally dry and sunny, so watering has become an important part of keeping crops productive. I share how I prioritise watering, succession plant between existing crops, and keep a small space producing food over many months.

As it's already end of July and the tomatoes in your video are still green: I am a bit relieved, since this ist the same here and I was already worried that maybe I planted to late (sowing in early April and planting last week of May), but I guess that it was just to hot for a while and they stopped ripening. Normally I start harvesting my tomatoes (not in a tunnel) in early July, but this year is different. What is your take on this?

Great video Charles, thank you. Interesting to see your La Diva cucumbers. We're growing them for the first time this year, up an A-frame trellis. They are sending out side shoot all over the place but only getting about a cucumber a week off each plant. They get 10L water every other day....perhaps not enough sun as they are now shaded by runner beans. Look forward to the next installment. Many, many thanks for inspiration and advice

As a small garden owner (renter) myself I really appreciate these videos! You mentioned French beans, during our travels to Singapore we bought a small packet of beans that were called "yard long beans", they are very long and the plant stays very low (not climbing). They produce a lot in a short time and they're great for rotation. You just plant them, they make a TON of long beans, then you remove the plants and plant something else. And the nicest thing is, I saved seeds from last year and they produced the same quality again!

Sadly to say I bought 4 packets of seed and 3 of them were very disappointing

Other makes of seed did fine.

@wendybesley8787I use an old broom handle for a dibber and I have two lengths of pvc piping , one is big enough to drop plants thru, and a smaller one to drop seeds thru. This minimizes the amount of bending over I do as I have back issues.
@donisenberg3032You've taught me a helluva lot the last few years and no longer do I despair when a crop goes awry..I just plant something else i have ready in plugs!
My June sown lettuce were so grateful for their water after harvesting today that they suddenly contracted towards their centres. Magic!

How much food can you get?
I'm hoping to see just how many tomatoes I can get.
I have cherry tomato plants (Riesentraube) with at least 1000 flowers each, with hundreds of flowers on each truss.
I'm seriously not joking. I was counting flowers on just ONE TRUSS, I got fed up about half way through and lost count at around 300.
So far, I'd say 30-40% of the flowers are becoming visible fruit.
I've got other varieties of cherry tomatoes and the most productive one (Sweet Aperitif) has about 80 flowers/fruit on its biggest truss.
I've only been growing a few years and, this year, I decided to grow indeterminate cherry for the first time.
Seeing so many flowers on one plant is quite a sight to behold. I'm normally impressed when my determinate cherry get 150 fruit on the whole plant.
I'm also keen to see my greenhouse parsnips that I inter-planted with the tomatoes.
I pulled the smallest one the other day, its root was 2 feet long and chunky. Most have leaves between 3 and 4 feet tall.
❤I have had a wet summer, cool nights and impressed by the growth. I only have small herbs in the greenhouse today, but am potting them up before washing the windows in the greenhouse. Then starting seeds for the autumn garden. My cousin is having a giant tulip tree removed from her property in 2 months and we’re excited to see how much sunlight can get through to revamp her gardening space. 😊

@stusworld2025I wish we could send you some rain from New England. We had thunderstorms yesterday with 2 in / 5 cm of rain in less than an hour.
I'm amazed by your beets. I haven't had great luck growing nice large beets like yours, but do get little ones with rather nice greens. I think I have gotten into the habit of thinking of them as a cool season crop and don't let them continue through the peak of summer. I'll try to remember to give them more time and space.
Hi Charles. Looks like you're doing a lot of the same stuff I'm doing over here. I had leeks growing in a grow bag for a couple months and just transplanted a couple weeks ago from where I harvested my first early potatoes. Also just transplanted lettuce from inside and have some more that will go out next week. Cucumbers didn't do so well this year. Maybe because I had peas growing there first and the cucs had too much competition when they were youg. Not sure but will probably skip the peas in that area next year and see if it makes a difference. We are getting at least some rain over here this summer. Sounds like more than you. Good luck!
