Locals are just as likely to break many/most on your list of "Don'ts" and of course it gets blamed on visitors/tourists. Not saying that visitors don't do dumb things, but poor judgement, complacency and entitlement of locals is just as bad.

I was on an express train and if your station is a major stop such as Times Square or 34th St Penn Station, express trains will stop there at both of these stations even though they are consecutive since they are major destinations. But check the map to be sure.

The speaker of this video is dipping innocent touristas slowly into the "street rules of the jungle" of NYC in a "politically correct" way of speech that touristas are used to..."don't do this, don't do that...."
Basically he's saying nicely--"YO! Don't gawk at homies, or you gonna Diss them, and you're gonna get a cap busted in your ass or head!"
"Don't go to the empty spaces on a train when no one else will" means "YO, watch out for the nutjobs!"
Listen to this gentleman. His advice is golden. This is NYC, not some small town in the burbs where the rules are more civilized. People in NYC live on top of each other, and the borders are more strict to maintain social, physical, and psychological boundaries in such a cramped town.
These rules can keep you from being mugged, keep you from getting into a fight, or save your life.

I've been working in public transit for 20 years here in Toronto. Many of these rules apply pretty much everywhere but I still enjoyed the video.

It's more common for a train that is designated by a number to have different entrances for each direction than it is for a train designated by a letter. However, that's not 100%, so you still have to read the signs before getting on.

In Manhattan, if you're traveling uptown, the street numbers are going "up" (i.e. the numbers are getting higher) and conversely, if you're going downtown the numbers are getting smaller (i.e. going "down").
The same rule applies in the Bronx.
It is really ok and pleasant for me to talk with other people on the subway. Don't make them shy!
With these instructions, we will have a depressed society soon!

@albertmalkowski2904Most of those rules apply to most cities. Like having your pass/card ready before reaching the gates, not standing on the left side of escalators, letting people getting off the trains before boarding etc...
@AlexandreCurielI've never been to New York, though I'd love to go someday, but I'm familiar with that delayed open of the doors from the Chicago L trains. I guess there are a few similarities in etiquette between the two.

@paulanderson7796Ah, the MTA subway PA systems. Usually, garbled speech and why do they wait till the noisy train is screeching into the station to make an announcement? Also, don't talk or make eye contact with other passengers. This could save your life.

@SoFloGal12100% correct. Do not listen to google because they will show you the long way. Ask the people waiting to help you. No taxi unless you are drunk. Each train has a buddy and they go in the same direction. One local and one express. You can also drink the water. Great filtration system.
@podersa241No more 9 local train?! Used to study in NYC in the early 2000s; monthly metro card has more than doubled in price. I remember paying 63 bucks, now it's almost 140. Crazy.
