What Does It Take to Start a Union?

Video Overview & Insights

What if the company you worked for couldn't make decisions without your input?

How do u get started?

— @cansomeonestopthis

In 2021, the workers at Pavement Coffeehouse in Boston found themselves wondering how they could have a bigger say in their working conditions. Not long after, they became the first unionized coffee shop in Massachusetts.

Emma Delaney, a former supervisor at Pavement and now a full-time organizer at NEJB Unite Here, was one of the many employees that led the union's organization efforts. She shared with us what it was like to start a union at Pavement, what it really means to "organize" a workplace, and what you may be putting at risk when you do.

Shitty workers like this chick get in unions and then your stuck with that shitty worker from here on out. Yes a union can be very good but it can also be very bad.

A union is a voice that the company must listen to. With out a union you are a lone individual without influence of any kind. An exploration.

If only businessmen followed the capitalistic ethical values that has been implemented by Adam Smith there will be no need for what's so called unions , also i find the fact that unions are becoming an important thing to have in order to protect workers rights awkward in a "democracy" because it makes it appear as if educated people still don't know the alphabets of human rights in a civil advanced society

Germans don't treat labor/workers separate from management & both work in unison, & that's the model world needs to follow

Shame on HBR for making unions look like they are useful besides pushing communist political agendas (and using naive workers for that evil purpose).

The market solves itself, if the employees are being ill-treated by a company they can just be open about it using things like Glassdoor making future employees aware that the company is not good. It does not require a bunch of authoritarian people pushing the government to create even more bureaucracies against businesses, big companies can survive with more bureaucracies but smaller ones will simply go bankrupt.

This is not business review, this is ANTI-business review.
