Why Africa is so Poor (Hint: It isn’t Colonialism)

Africa's real problem lies in it's nearly 85% of it's population being unskilled and unemployable. They simply do not have the manpower to overcome their lack of wealth. The only time an African country had a growing economy was when foreigners came there to do the work.

Slavery, Colonization, Racism, Discrimination, none of them is the reason why Black people and Africa is poor. Western oppression is the reason. The West have a long history of killing African leaders trying to develop their countries. The West also make it difficult for Black people to access the financing needed to build infrastructure, start and grow businesses etc. This is why a lot of African countries had to turn to China for loans to build infrastructure.

Hi. Very good summary. Corruption (Idi Amin, Mugabe), and tribalism hold developing nations back. Rwanda was torn to bits by the conflict between Tutsi and Hutu. There's another and bigger underlying cause for Africa being poor -- one of the root causes. Africa is NOT a good "steward" of her resources -- and WHAT God gave her!! When you don't steward "well" what God gave you -- and outsiders SEE your value and the potential -- of course, you are -- bound -- to be exploited and extorted, as a result of your "own" -- negligence and -- laziness! God has made -- very "clear" -- HOW He feels about "lazy" -- stewards....

Botswana is also one of the only African nations that guarantees equal rights for women including abortion. Women who work contribute to the economy. Women who are forced to create babies without being able to work are a drain on economies. Despite the abolition of racial apartheid in the 1990's, gender apartheid is alive and well in Africa.

It's not the land, it's the people.

Tribalism and endemic corruption. When I worked in Chad, a Canadian teacher was leaving and cited the government-approved textbooks that gave examples of how to get the most from corruption. So it's literally taught in school from their earliest years.

Colonialism didnt help and neither does the rampant corruption, but neither is the cause of Africa's poverty, they are symptoms. They probably wouldnt have been colonized, at least not as extensively and easily, and there wouldn't be such a need for corruption, to fight over and hoard what little scraps they have, if it werent for the root problems.

And almost all of those problems are related to geography, weather, and disease.

Lack of fully navigable rivers and almost complete lack of natural ports prevent trade, as do the Sahara desert and Congo rainforest that cover much of the continent.

Weather and disease making it extremely difficult to raise livestock in the majority of the continent. There are many other factors as well I won't list them all.

This may not sound crucial, but it is. And it was enough to get them off to a MUCH slower start. And those at the bottom, tend to stay at the bottom, at least for a long time. It takes a lot more to get to the top from the bottom. The rest of the world doesnt want them to succeed, they are actively holding them down in various ways. And why shouldnt they. It benefits them more. Less competition, and power/leverage over them to take their resources and the like. Major shifts would have to happen for Africa to rise. Its unlikely that will happen any time soon

Though its extremely unlikely any African country can become a suoerpower any time soon, there are still steps they can take towards bettering themselves. Take Burkina Faso for example, one of the worst countries in Africa by many metrics. But improving from making the right choices. Taking a hard stance against Islamic terrorist organizations, and more importantly, severing ties with and forcing out the French, the only European country to have maintained colonialism in Africa and graped the Sahel for its resources since. Now they are gaining control over their resoueces again, for the first time in centuries. Ibrahim Traore, the leader of that country, is to credit for that and much else.

I have more respect for him than any world leader besides Bukele in El Salvador. Both inherited absolutely horrific situations and impoverished countries, and are doing what is right no matter how hard or harsh some of it may seem, to better the future of their countries.

Again, I don't see any African countries becoming superpowers in my lifetime, but if they get a few leaders like Traore and Bukele, they could at least improve their standing and standard of living.

The biggest problem Africa has is corruption. Some of histories worst dictators are African, imposing harsh living standards on their own people. Another detrimental factor is the violent spread of islam, which in its nature is anti progress.

This is the sheeple ultraright answer, in reality Africa is still poor because of neocolonialism, incredible debt enforced on them, and capitalist corruption.
Using Singapore is idiotic because Singapore had nothing to exploit and massively by foreign investment. Something the altright loves to deny despite all the proof. But then again, the altright never believes in science and fact anyway so....

If people are told by those around them that their horrific situation is a consequence of them being oppressed, and not a product of their own corruption and inept practicea, then they'll have no desire to stop the corruption that's crippling themselves.
